Boys and Girls

Do you think the experiences around obesity are different for boys than girls? Do you think girls are more compassionate toward boys??

Swimming is going well for Sadie. Food journals, not so well. This weekend we resume our Saturday morning walking training together. One step at a time!

Startling observation at the 7th grade "Spirit Night": Matthew might be a little over sensitive about teasing. We got to the venue, and he immediately went to a group of boys who were happy to see him. A little later he found me, was all discouraged and mad, because one of his "so called friends" said, upon greeting him, "Hey Fat Guy!"

OK I can understand how that would be a little upsetting. I asked Matthew what he would have thought if the kid had said, "Hey Big Guy!" and he said, tellingly, that would be worse, because that would mean the kid is trying to be nice about it but still noticing it.

So we had a little talk about embracing what you are to other people, taking it lightly in some cases. We had a long talk. I hope it helped.

Meanwhile, Matthew has grown an inch and a half since camp but, unfortunately, has also gained a few pounds. He's looking good though - a slightly flattening stomach. Puberty, here we come. I think physically, it will be welcome and might help. Emotionally, he's a little oversensitive.

I do think boys react differently than girls. My first thought: boys just say what they think and can be insensitive but the don't mean much. Girls can be meaner in a subtler way and are more skilled at veiled insults. I'm thinking of some girls my daughter was in middle school and high school with.
